Minky, Mimi, Murphy, Minnie & Mindy's Story
Sun 07.10.07 - Thrown from a car in a cat carrier.  The cat carrier broke and mum escaped, leaving 5 tiny kittens.  Picked up by two young girls who took them home.  The RSPCA was contacted and the little ones were brought in to us.  Initially the kittens only look as if they are 2-3 weeks old.  They are very small, extremely thin, covered in fleas, and with fleas, comes worms. The biggest weighs 390g, the smallest weighs just 210g.  A newborn kitten weighs around 100g.  Treat them all for fleas and worms.

Mon 08.10.07 - It becomes obvious from the two stronger females these kittens must be at least 6 weeks old if not older.  The three boys are desparately under nourished and the fleas have sapped them of most their blood.  They are very anaemic.  The smallest is very lethargic and quiet.

Wed 10.10.07 - They all have a bath to get rid of the flea dirt. When they are wet it shows the true extent of their condition.  Their tiny skeletons, it was like bathing tiny baby birds.  I am worried I might break something.

Thur 11.10.07 - A few days later and the smallest weight has dropped down to 180g.  The others have put on just 10g in 4 days.  You would normally expect a kitten to put on 100g per week.  Normally anything less than 7g a day is not good news.  I am syringing 1ml of Nurish-Um which is a vitamin paste, feeding a/d which is a very high protein convalesence food, and Whiskas kitten milk.

Fri 12.10.07 - A trip to the vets does not bode well.  The vet has never seen such small under developed kittens.  We have nothing to lose.  We continue syringe feeding and put them on a course of antibiotics.  Today brings more bad news as they have all lost weight again.

Sun 21.10.07 - Two weeks on and we are all doing well.  The teaniest of the weanies is now playing and showing normal kitten behaviour.  We are not out of the woods yet, and even my husband comments that he didn't think the two smallest of the boys - Minky and Milo, would survive - he's not the only one.

Sun 28.10.07 - Now in to our third week and we are all making good progress.  Still feeding a combination of a/d, almo nature kitten, and natures menu.  They have now doubled their weight since they first came in and are progressing well.  As each week goes on I start to relax a little more!

Beth (aged 14) and Ellie (ages 12)  Brayshaw, together with Callum (ages 10) and Joby (aged 8) Leverton raised £52 when they held a table top sale.  With this money we were able to buy Minky, Mimi, Murphy, Minnie and Mindy some very special, but very expensive food to help them grow big and strong.  Thank you very much to the four of you!
Week 4 and we are all doing well - apart from Murphy who seems have lost all his whiskers!  They no longer have the a/d but are still on a high protein kitten food.  They are not quite as fragile as they once were and love being in the outdoor pen, climbing, running and jumping across everything.  It is nothing short of a miracle that the two smallest have survived.  Another week on, and so far so good!
